Kale and Pear, what a happy pair!

DSC05957I saw a poster on Pinterest the other day , it said “Green Juice” and had a drawing of the ingredients you see in the photo above. There was no recipe or even the suggestion that those were the ingredients to make one juice rather than just random ingredients  people normally use when juicing.  However, I was a bit bored of my usual green juices (been drinking them for more than a year now), so I decided to give it a try and see what happened.

The result? Not bad at all! I don’t think it will be my new favourite, but given the huge amount of kale and that the only sweet ingredient was pear, this turn out to be quite refreshing and tasty.

I’ll use a tad less ginger next time because my mouth was burning by the time I finished my glass, and that’s not something I particularly enjoyed.

Ingredients:

1 quarter cucumber

1 big bunch of kale

half a lemon, peeled.

1 pear, quartered (no need to peel).

a small piece of ginger (less than a thumb)

100 ml water

How to:

1.- Add the 100ml water to the jar of your juicer.

2.- Place the remaining ingredients in the juicer in following order: kale, ginger, lemon, cucumber, pear and juice!

That’s all 🙂

Tastes like: none of the ingredients on the list. It is mildly sweet, sharp and with a clear “vegetable” taste. You don’t feel like you are drinking kale though, it’s just that, unlike other juices that completely conceal the taste of vegetables, this one doesn’t. So may not the the best one to try as your first green juice.

 What’s good about it?

Kale has calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and vitamins C, E and K. It supports thyroid  and metabolism, detoxes the stomach, improves digestion and is a potent antioxidant. Yes, the humble kale is quite packed with nutrients!

Pear has calcium, magnesium, potassium, folic acid, pectin and iodine. It’s diuretic, it stimulates metabolism and pectin removes toxins from the gut.

Lemon is rich in potassium and vitamin C, it’s a potent antiseptic and natural antibiotic, as the Vitamin C boost the immune system.

Even though we only use a tiny portion on this juice, and therefore the concentration of nutrients will be minuscule, still, it’s good to know that Ginger has calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. It stimulates the liver and gall bladder and improves circulation. It is also a potent antispasmodic.

Together these ingredients form quite a powerful, nutrient-rich detox juice. If you are trying to remove some of the burden from your digestive system after a weekend of heavy eating, you can also try this fennel-apple combination.
